WHY IS START ESSENTIAL?
West Coconut Grove as a community continuously vies with obstacles that hinder students from succeeding. Impediments include poverty, violence, segregation, under-funded schools, and programs. Additionally, the youth now must compete with a new foe as they experience the negative consequences of gentrification. These barriers to success also hamper the psychological development of our community's youth.
THE START PROGRAM AT A GLANCE
Striving To Attain Remarkable Teens (START) is a non-profit after-school program that provides community-driven, experienced-based learning opportunities to middle/high school students ages 11- 19 with a connection to Miami, Florida's West Coconut Grove who have financial and domestic hardships to develop character and academic skills necessary for lifelong success.
ACTIVITIES
START strives to ensure success by generating an understanding of ideas that cut across disciplines and of the connections between different disciplines and their relationship to the real world. This is done while addressing individual differences and helping to develop important, transferable skills. Thus, our ambition is to cultivate the whole child. To do so, we have identified four values in which to provide support: academics, fiscal and social responsibility, health and wellness, and environmental responsibility. Additionally, as a program we provide journeys for our participants in the form of trips that are either academic or cultural in nature. These adventures truly enrich their lives!
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES: SELF & COMMUNITY
To enhance students' ability to become more proactive in their responsibilities to themselves, the environment and their community, participants engage in the following:
Community Enrichment
Cultural Awareness/Sensitivity
Self-Care
Promoting Community Non-Violence
HEALTH & FITNESS: MIND & BODY
The Fit Process is a fitness approach geared
towards young adults who aspire to better
their lives mentally and physically. With the focus on
fitness and life style management, students will be
taught through small goal achievement methods
in an effort to foster growth on their way to
achieving a larger life goal.
